Working in an asbestos abatement company is both exciting and fulfilling because each project helps to prevent illnesses caused by asbestos and asbestos-containing materials. As a newbie, it is essential to keep safe during the asbestos removal process. Besides, the last thing you want is being reminded continuously about obvious safety procedures by a supervisor because it increases exposure to asbestos fibres.

While it is easy to follow the necessary protective procedures, the trivial aspects are easy to forget or ignore. This article highlights some overlooked or forgotten safety procedures during asbestos removal.

1. Wear Two Coveralls

Coveralls are designed to protect an asbestos removal team by creating an adequate barrier between the body and a work area. Therefore, it might seem enough to wear one coverall during an entire asbestos removal process. However, the truth is that a single coverall is not enough for asbestos removal because you need to leave a work area at some point. If you have a single coverall, it is easy to transfer asbestos fibres outside a work area. Wearing two coveralls allows you to remove the exterior suit whenever you need to leave a work area and keeps the external environment free of asbestos contamination.

2. Tape Coverall Outside of Boots

Newbies believe that it does not matter whether you tuck your coveralls inside your boots or not as long as you tape them tight. Notably, tucking your coveralls inside your shoes might seem like the right thing to do to keep asbestos fibres out, but it is not. If you do so, asbestos dust will fall inside your boots, especially while removing your coveralls. The best way to protect yourself is to tape your coveralls outside your shoes. This way, a coverall will remain in place as you take it off, thereby ensuring asbestos dust fall to the ground.

3. Wear Coveralls a Size Bigger

Why would you wear a coverall a size bigger? Since most coveralls used in asbestos removal are not breathable, if you wear one that clutches close to your body, then you will get uncomfortably hot. You might be forced to keep going outside for fresh air, and this only exposes you to asbestos fibres. The fact that you are wearing two coveralls won't make it any easier. A coverall that is a size bigger allows your body to regulate itself and stay cool, which will enable you to work in closed spaces better.
