Insulation in the attic offers a lot of benefits, and it's a relatively easy project to do on your own and a relatively affordable project to outsource to an insulation installation professional. Wondering if you need insulation installation in your attic? Here are five signs it's time.

1. You Want Lower Energy Bills

Are your summer cooling bills too high? Are your winter heating bills getting higher than expected? Putting insulation in your attic can help with both of these issues.

As you may know from putting cold beverages into coolers and hot coffee or soup into thermos, insulation can help lock in both hot and cool temperatures. When you add insulation to the attic, it makes your entire home more insulated. As a result, you lose less air from the inside and you gain less air from the outside.

By extension, your home's interior stays closer to the temp you want, with less energy wasted. That ultimately helps lower your utility bills.

2. You Feel Drafts Coming From the Attic

In some cases, you may even feel icy drafts or burst of hot air coming from the attic. You may notice this around the entry to the attic, or you may notice fluctuating temperatures in the rooms that are directly under your attic.

3. You Plan to Convert the Attic to Liveable Space

If you currently only use your attic for storage, it may be fine uninsulated. However, if you plan to convert that area to a bedroom, a playroom, a home office or any other type of space, you need to install insulation. Otherwise, it will be nearly impossible to make those areas comfortable and to keep them cool or warm without spending a lot of money.

4. You Want to Add Vaulted Ceilings

Similarly, if you also plan to remove part of your attic floor so that you can add a vaulted ceiling over your existing living space, you also need to add insulation. This can be a tricky process, so you may want to outsource the insulation to a professional who can work with a structural engineer or contractor to create your new vaulted ceiling.

5. Your Existing Insulation Needs Replacing

Finally, there are also cases where you may have insulation currently, but you need to update it. If you are noticing drafts or hot air, that can be a sign that your current insulation is failing. In addition, you may want to do a visual check for holes or damage from animals.
