When you don't have a lot of storage in your home, it might not be a big issue when you first move in, but as the months and years pass, you'll likely tend to buy more than you get rid of. This is when you'll start experiencing a major shortage of organization for your different items. Luckily, there are a few different ways you can renovate your home in order to add a bit more storage.

Have Open Kitchen Shelving

This open shelving can either replace your current kitchen cabinets or be added to any empty spots on the wall in your kitchen or dining area. The reason open shelving is often better than cabinets is because you can be little more flexible with the size of the items that you place in there. The shelving is usually a little further apart so taller items fit, and if an appliance is a bit too large in diameter to fit inside a traditional cabinet, it's okay to let it hang over the edge of an open shelf a little bit. Consider converting your current cabinets to open shelving and look at all the new possibilities you have.

Install Built-In Storage or Shelving Units

A good way to make use of your current space without having to tear down walls or add extensions is by using all of your vertical space. You can consult a residential carpenter who is able to make you a custom shelving unit or bookshelf that will appear as if it is part of the room it is in, but really makes use of all empty wall space. Try adding an entire wall of storage in your family room with the custom unit to blend in well with your décor while also giving you tons more space for storing extra items. You can also have smaller units built, such as inside your closets or even above windows.

Maximise Spaces

If you take a look around your home, you will probably find some areas where you can fit some extra items. Instead of making it cluttered, think of ways you can maximise those spaces without taking away from the clean look of your home. For example, instead of just throwing a bunch of items under the bed, you can get baskets that fit under there for organization or even have a carpenter build custom units for underneath the bed that easily pull out and match the style of bed you have.
