As you approach Christmas time, many factories and manufacturing facilities take the opportunity to give their production staff leave and enter into a shutdown. This can be a great time to bring on some casual workers to get some extra jobs done during this time.

Sentry work

Often work being done during a major shutdown involves confined space entry, which is defined as any area with only one point of entry and exit and that is not a regular place of work (as well as having a potential for a buildup of unsafe gases). This can include work inside tanks, inside of large machinery, or in drainage systems, which often need to be cleaned and maintained regularly to ensure the equipment works correctly year round. Sentry work requires keeping track of everyone who enters and exits the space, as well as regular audio check-ins to ensure that everyone in the space is still okay. This work can be a little dull for skilled production operators, so if your workers would prefer to have Christmas off, it can make sense to use manufacturing labour hire to act as sentries for the maintenance work.

Repainting walkway lines

It's important for walkway lines that indicate the safe areas of the plant to be clear and easy to follow. This usually requires regular repainting, and during a maintenance shutdown can be a great time to do this as there will be less foot traffic in the plant. This is also a good time to repaint handrails and stairwells. Doing this during a shutdown limits the chance of the painting getting ruined and means that the plant will look refreshed for the start of the new year.

Cleaning storage sheds and removing rubbish

It can be hard to get time to clean out the back of storage sheds and remove broken machinery or production items during the year. However, these items can easily build up and create a hazardous environment that can make the area more likely to attract spiders and other insects, as well as potentially creating a fire hazard (if the rubbish is flammable). It can be useful to get labour hire to help you clean up this areas and remove any rubbish.

As you can see, this can be a great time to get some help around the plant for extra support during a maintenance shutdown. This allows your normal production staff to get a break and allows your plant to still get some of the needed work done so you can have a great start to the next year.
